What’s PVD Plating? Progress of PVD plating and Advantages

Vacuum deposition, commonly known as PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition), is a high-tech surface coating process often used in jewelry manufacturing. In this process, materials are heated to very high temperatures in a vacuum chamber, where there’s no air. This causes the materials to turn into vapor. This vapor then deposits onto the surface of jewelry, creating a thin coating. Stainless steel is more suitable for this PVD plating process.

The principle behind the coloring in PVD plating is the control of coating thickness. Different thicknesses of the coating result in different colors because when light passes through coatings of varying thicknesses, it reflects and interferes differently, creating distinct color effects. By precisely controlling the thickness of the coating, a wide range of colors can be achieved, making it a versatile method for achieving various color finishes in jewelry.

In summary, vacuum deposition, such as PVD, is a highly precise physical process that occurs in a vacuum environment. It’s responsible for creating different colors in jewelry coatings by controlling the thickness of the deposited material. It’s not a chemical process, but rather a physical one.

PVD Plating Process

Hanging the Jewelry on Fixtures: The first step involves placing the jewelry on special fixtures or jigs. These fixtures are designed to hold the jewelry securely during the plating process and ensure even coverage of the plating material.

Cleaning: This is crucial to remove any dirt, oils, or other contaminants that could interfere with the plating process. Cleaning is typically done using a series of chemical or ultrasonic baths. We normally have 10~40 tans for cleaning process. Since this process is the key process which will determine the quality of the plating result:

Drying: After cleaning, the jewelry needs to be completely dried to remove any moisture. Moisture can cause defects in the plating, so this step is essential.

Plating in the Vacuum Chamber: Next, the jewelry, still on its fixtures, is placed inside the vacuum chamber for plating. In the vacuum chamber, the material to be plated (such as gold, silver, or other metals) is vaporized in a controlled manner, causing it to deposit evenly onto the surface of the jewelry.

Removing the Jewelry from Fixtures: Once the plating process is complete, the jewelry is removed from the fixtures. Care is taken to avoid damaging the newly applied coating.

Final Inspection and Finishing: The last step involves a thorough inspection of the jewelry to ensure the quality and uniformity of the plating. Any necessary final touches or finishing processes are completed at this stage.

PVD plating is the number one choice of jewelry designers worldwide for the following reasons:

  1. Enhanced Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel is naturally corrosion-resistant, and PVD plating further strengthens this aspect, especially in humid or corrosive environments.
  2. Compatibility with High-Temperature Treatment: Stainless steel often undergoes heat treatment. PVD plating bonds well with surfaces post-heat treatment, whereas traditional plating might degrade under high temperatures.

  9. Strong Adhesion: PVD plating adheres strongly to stainless steel, ensuring that the coating does not easily peel off. This reason makes the color maintain longer than other coating process.
  10. Heat Resistance: PVD coatings can withstand higher temperatures, suitable for applications that might be exposed to high heat.

Every seller wants to keep the color of their jewelry for as long as possible, if there is a choice, it is recommended that sellers prefer PVD plating.
